Museum Martena

Museum Martena is located in the most beautiful town castle in Franeker. In the museum, you use all your senses to take in the story of the town. Drink a cup of tea in the garden room, feel the luxurious dress of Saepke van Vervou, taste the spices in the show kitchen or admire the many talents of the first female university student in the Netherlands, Anna Maria van Schurman.

In the attic you will find the Buitenbeentjes, the Judgement of Solomon and the Kooistra Fairground. Drop a coin into the machine and the lights come on, the attractions start turning and fairground music echoes through the space.
In the Buitenbeentjes exhibition, the museum puts nine remarkable people in the spotlight and tells their stories. There is also attention for the history of psychiatry in Franeker.
