Crossing towns, villages and a diversity of landscapes and language areas
The Jabikspaad (Frisian for Way of St James) is a pilgrimage route of approximately 140 kilometres. It runs from Sint Jacobiparochie in North-West Friesland, via Leeuwarden or Franeker to Heerenveen, ending at its final point: Hasselt (Overijssel). You walk or cycle various stages, collect stamps from friendly locals and discover centuries-old heritage and beautiful natural areas.
The Frisian Camino de Santiago
According to legend, Emperor Charlemagne dreamt of a starry road, beginning at the Frisian Sea and ending in Spain. The canonised Saint James appeared in his dream and promised him: Until the end of time, pilgrims will travel from sea to sea. For the emperor, this was a reason to connect the various cultures of countries and peoples. A large network of European Way of St James routes came into being. Since 2000, the Frisian Camino has been equipped with signposting and there are stamp points for walkers.
The Jabikspaad has been a much-walked route over former lords' paths since 2000

The power of pilgrimage
Pilgrimage is an active way to be struck by the stillness and beauty that nature and the landscape offer you. The daily pace slows down, which for many pilgrims is a method of allowing, processing or finding rest for their own life experiences.
While walking and during encounters, you experience the richness of life. Life after a pilgrimage is therefore always different from before!
